For the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Serving:

  • 4-6 hamburger buns
  • Pickles (optional)
  • Coleslaw (optional)
  • Potato chips or fries (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Filling:
    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat if necessary.
    • Add finely chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until softened.
    • Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  • Make the Sauce:
    • Add tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, and smoked paprika to the skillet.
    • Stir to combine and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Assemble and Serve:
    • Toast hamburger buns if desired.
    • Spoon the sloppy joe filling onto the buns.
    • Add pickles, coleslaw, potato chips, or fries on the side if desired.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add a dash of hot sauce or some chopped jalapenos.
  • You can use ground turkey or chicken as a substitute for ground beef.
