Ingredients

Scale

For the Pasta Base:

  • 1 lb spaghetti
  • Salt for pasta water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

For the Meat Sauce:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or Italian sausage)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

For the Creamy Cheese Layer:

  • 1 cup ricotta cheese (or cottage cheese)
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

For Topping:

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • Cook the Spaghetti: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and toss with 1 tbsp olive oil to prevent sticking. Set aside.
  • Make the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet, cook ground beef (or Italian sausage) over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat. Add onion and garlic, cooking until softened. Stir in marinara sauce, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Prepare the Creamy Cheese Layer: In a medium bowl, mix ricotta, cream cheese, sour cream, shredded mozzarella, Parmesan, and fresh parsley (if using) until smooth.
  • Assemble the Spaghetti: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large baking dish, layer the spaghetti at the bottom. Spread the creamy cheese mixture evenly over the pasta. Top with the meat sauce, then sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  • Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese on top is melted and bubbly.
  • Serve: Garnish with fresh basil or parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • Swap ricotta with cottage cheese for a lighter option.
  • For a vegetarian version, replace the meat with sautéed mushrooms or other vegetables.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated for up to 3 days.
