Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb cooked, shredded beef (leftover roast beef or deli-style beef)
  • 1 cup beef gravy
  • 4 slices of provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sandwich buns
  • 2 tbsp butter (for toasting)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sautéed mushrooms (optional)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the Beef: In a medium skillet, combine the shredded beef with beef gravy. Heat over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until warmed through. Season with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Toast the Rolls: Spread butter on the cut sides of the hoagie rolls or sandwich buns. In a separate skillet or on a griddle, toast the rolls cut-side down until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Assemble the Sandwiches: Place a portion of the hot beef on each toasted roll. Top with a slice of cheese (and sautéed onions or mushrooms, if using).
  4. Melt the Cheese: Transfer the assembled sandwiches to a baking sheet and broil in the oven for 2-3 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Finish and Serve: Spread mayonnaise on the top halves of the rolls if desired. Serve immediately with a side of gravy for dipping.
