This Classic Patty Melt recipe combines juicy beef patties, gooey melted cheese, and golden caramelized onions sandwiched between crispy rye bread, making it a timeless diner-style favorite.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 2 tbsp butter, divided
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet and sauté onions on medium-low heat until caramelized. Set aside.
  • Shape ground beef into two patties and season with salt and pepper. Cook in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked.
  • Butter one side of each rye bread slice.
  • Assemble the sandwich: Place a slice of Swiss cheese on the unbuttered side of bread, followed by the beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and the second slice of bread (buttered side out).
  • Grill the sandwich in a skillet until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. Flip once.
  • Serve warm and enjoy!
