Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Patty Melt:
    • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
    • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
    • 8 slices rye bread (marbled or seeded rye)
    • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for spreading on the bread)
    • 8 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar, if preferred)
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • Optional: dash of Worcestershire sauce (for added beef flavor)
  • For Caramelized Onions:
    • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, to enhance sweetness)
    • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • Caramelize the onions:
    • In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium-low heat.
    • Add sliced onions, sprinkle with salt, and optionally add sugar.
    • Stir occasionally and cook for 20-30 minutes until onions are golden brown and caramelized. Set aside.
  • Prepare the patties:
    • Shape ground beef into 4 thin patties. Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce (if using).
    • Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat and cook patties 3-4 minutes per side until cooked through. Set aside.
  • Assemble the sandwiches:
    • Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.
    • Place a slice of Swiss cheese on the unbuttered side of 4 bread slices.
    • Add one patty to each sandwich and top with caramelized onions.
    • Add another slice of Swiss cheese and cover with the remaining slices of rye bread (buttered side facing out).
  • Grill the sandwiches:
    • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
    • Grill each sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
    • Slice and serve hot.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, cook the patties with a splash of Worcestershire sauce.
  • Use cheddar cheese as an alternative to Swiss for a sharper flavor.
  • Caramelizing onions takes time, but the sweet, rich flavor is worth the wait!
