Fried green tomatoes are a delicious Southern staple with a crispy coating and tangy flavor.

  • 4 medium green tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • Slice green tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick slices and set aside.
  • In a shallow bowl, mix flour with salt, black pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  • In another shallow bowl, whisk together buttermilk and eggs.
  • Place cornmeal in a third shallow bowl.
  • Dip each tomato slice first in the flour mixture, then in the buttermilk mixture, and finally in the cornmeal, coating evenly.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
  • Fry tomato slices in batches, about 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan.
  • Transfer fried tomatoes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of garlic powder to the flour mixture.
  • Serve with a dipping sauce like ranch or remoulade for added taste.
