Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Place one pastry sheet in the bottom of the baking dish, prick with a fork, and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool.
  • In a medium saucepan, heat the milk until hot but not boiling.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks, vanilla extract, and salt.
  • Gradually add the hot milk to the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
  • Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and boiling.
  • Pour the custard over the baked pastry sheet in the baking dish.
  • Top with the second sheet of puff pastry, pricking with a fork.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the top pastry is golden brown.
  • Let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  • Before serving, dust with powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Ensure the custard is thickened before pouring it over the pastry to avoid a runny consistency.
  • For extra flavor, add a vanilla bean to the milk while heating and remove it before mixing with the egg yolk mixture.
