Make a classic Sausage and Peppers Sandwich with Cheese, combining Italian sausage, bell peppers, onions, and melted mozzarella. Easy to prepare and full of flavor!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Sausage and Peppers:

  • 1 pound Italian sausage links (sweet, mild, or hot)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 large green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 large yellow bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce (optional)

For the Sandwich:

  • 4 hoagie rolls or Italian sandwich rolls
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese or provolone cheese slices
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add Italian sausage links and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove sausages from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add sliced bell peppers, onion, and garlic. Sauté until vegetables are tender, about 7-8 minutes.
  • Add dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine.
  • Slice the cooked sausages and return them to the skillet. Add marinara sauce (if using) and stir to coat the sausages and vegetables. Cook for an additional 5 minutes until heated through.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Split the hoagie rolls and brush the insides with melted butter and garlic powder.
  • Toast the rolls in the oven for 5-7 minutes until lightly crispy.
  • Assemble the sandwiches by placing sausage and pepper mixture on the rolls. Top with shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese slices.
  • Place the sandwiches back in the oven for a few minutes until the cheese melts.
  • Garnish with fresh basil leaves (if using) and serve hot.

Notes

  • Adjust the heat level by choosing sweet, mild, or hot Italian sausages and adding or omitting red pepper flakes.
  • For a saucier sandwich, use marinara sauce.
